Rotary cutters shaping



Such expensive parts as rotary cutters, or cutting rollers, are subject to significant wear while in operation. Modern packaging materials (chrome-ersatz etc.) may include ink layers based on “pearlescent” pigment and some special coatings. Such materials are highly attractive visually but are very aggressive by nature. They are abrasive and fine. Similar to diamond powder, such “elements” damage the edges of rotary cutters thus significantly reducing their lifetime. As a result the pack manufacturer has to purchase a new cutter. 


In 2006 specialists of Rotorprom mastered the technology of reshaping the profile rotary cutters. In addition to its own cutters, the company reshapes rotary cutters of other manufacturers but it shall be noted that some cutters cannot be reshaped. If cutter edges are deeply sheared and if the diameter of a rotary cutter is insufficient, it may be impossible to reshape the cutter. 


The abovementioned defects can be easily detected. Therefore we recommend you to carry out the preliminary inspection of the cutter on your own and do not incur expenses for transportation of a cutter at our address. 


A reshaped rotary cutter has almost the same lifetime as a new one. 


During any repeated reshaping of a rotary cutter its diameter will be reduced affecting the shape of a piece being cut (inner frame of a pack etc.). In some cases it is not important and some types of roller cutters can be reshaped many times. If the geometrical dimensions of a piece being cut are very important and it is critical to make changes up to several deciles of millimeter, the cutter can be reshaped just once or cannot be reshaped at all. 


In some cases the number of repeated rotary cutter reshaping can be determined by an experiment only.  


The process flow of reshaping the cutting edges of profile cutters consists in the following: reception of a rotary cutter from a customer, preliminary inspection using an optical instrument, polishing of the cutter, inspection of the non-reshaped edge of the cutter upon polishing, programming for CNC, reshaping, finish adjustment, final inspection of the profile cutters and packaging.


The cost of rotary cutter reshaping does not usually exceed the cost of a new cutter by more than 30% to 50%.
